MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008

Team Characteristics
Tough, hard playing team that never gives up. Their aggressive mentality makes them competitive in
every. Very good balance between inside and outside play on offense. All players can pass, handle
the ball and shoot from the perimeter. This makes their on ball screen and roll game dangerous.
Good team defensive concept with weak side support and physical play in the paint area. If the
outside shoot isn’t falling, they can resort to various other ways to score.

Primary goal is to weaken the defense using the on ball screen and roll. A majority of scoring comes
from the two man game created by the on ball screen. Post roll ahrd to the basket and can catch and
finish. Secondary action is the high low action created by the screener’s hard cut to the basket.
Excellent perimeter shooters stretch the defense and give post players room inside. Unselfish
offensive team loaded with great passers. Shooters spot up for open looks on any ball penetration.

Quick, skilled backcourt creates many scoring opportunities on the break. Most transition points
come from quick outlets after missed shots. Turnovers ignite quick run outs by perimeter players who
drive hard to the basket. Posts run will and score layups by running the middle of the floor ahead of
the defense.

Start with three players lined up across the lane. Two cross screens are set to free a cutter. If ball is
caught on perimeter, post steps out to on ball screen. Another is a quick in bounds pass followed by
a hand off and open three pointer behind the post player. The three stack high sets up a down
screen in the middle of the lane for the in bounds passer to receive the ball back for a shot.

Team defense is a combination of man to man, 2-3 and 3-2 zone. They are very aggressive on close
outs and give good on-ball pressure and contest shots. Close gaps hard on ball penetration looking
to create steals or turnovers by the dribbler. Cohesive team defensive system based on ball pressure
and good help away from the ball. Will press full court when needed.

AUSTRALIA
MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008

Team Characteristics
Balanced team with good team identify. Equal scoring comes from the perimeter and post areas.
High and low post players are the target of most possessions. Posts are good passers out of the
post, giving guards freedom to space up and receive passes. Mix up their defenses to keep the
offense off balance which eats up shot clock time. Aggressiveness defensive effort leads to easy
baskets in transition.

Offensive Tendencies [Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])[Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])[Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])
Most of the offense runs through high scoring post players. Half court offense and sets are focused
on feeding the post. After feeding the post, perimeter players space the floor for return passes out of
the post. Isolation is a part of their attack, using posts alone on one side of the floor to score in the
block area or mid post. Half of the offense is generated from on ball screening action usually from
the double high post initial set.

Transition [Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])[Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])[Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])
Quick, aggressive guards push the ball and create scoring on the break. Very good in transition after
turnovers or long rebounds. Point guard will throw ahead, use quick on ball screen on the top of the
floor, or throw directly into the post. A pass ahead to the wing is followed by an on ball screen and
roll or step back by the post.

Out of Bounds [Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])[Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])
Starting in a ball side double stack the ball is reversed and thrown into the weak side post player.
Side out of bounds plays flow into set plays after ball reversal. The shuffle cut/back screen
combination is common after ball reversal. The three across set attempts to free a shooter in the ball
side corner.

Team Defense [Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])[Only Registered Users Can See Links] ([Only Registered Users Can See Links])
A combination of defenses keeps the offense off balance. Full court pressure comes in form of man
to man and zone. Their defense begins after made field goal or free throw and they will pick up man
to man after missed shots also. Trapping areas are just before and over the mid court line. In the half
ourt they will trap on ball screens and any hand offs.
